Chicken Wire Mesh
Chicken wire is a family of wire mesh that can be manufactured from a variety of materials such as mild (plain) steel, galvanized wire, stainless steel wire, and galvanized wire that has been PVC coated. Thin gauge wires are twisted together to create the hexagonal pattern. There are two styles of twist, normal (straight) twist and reverse (double) twist. Ferrier Wire’s ½” and 1” galvanized chicken wire mesh/hex netting is reverse twist, our stainless steel is normal twist and our black PVC coated is reverse twist.

Chicken wire mesh (also known as hex netting) has many applications in outdoor environments which include privacy fence, backyard and holiday lighting, sculpture, and animal control (please note that it will not keep out raccoons). Our hex netting also has various indoor industrial applications such as an economical material to hold insulation in place.
For corrosive insulation projects stainless steel chicken wire/hex netting is recommended to hold the insulation in place. The chicken wire/hex netting is a popular choice due to its workability and cost-effectiveness.
The black PVC netting is a very durable product due to its construction (galvanized and then dipped in PVC) has been used to screen partridge pens. It is suitable for use in marine applications.
The chicken wire mesh/hex netting can be used for DIY projects such as collage frames, mesh wreaths and lampshades to name a few.
Ferrier Wire stocks two hexagon sizes in the galvanized chicken wire mesh/hex netting: ½” and 1”. The ½” material comes in 4’ x 150’ rolls, the 1” material in 2’, 4’ and 6’ wide x 150’ long rolls. The ½” material is hot dip galvanized after weaving for maximum corrosion resistance. In this process the netting is woven and then passed through a molten zinc bath to entirely and uniformly coat the material. The 1” material is woven from a galvanized wire also sometimes referred to as pre-galvanized material. The stainless steel chicken wire mesh/hex netting is made from 304 stainless steel and comes in 4’ x 150’ rolls.
While the name is misleading, chicken wire/hex netting is not actually a good option for chicken coops and runs. Coyotes, skunks, weasels, foxes, snakes and raccoons are much stronger and smarter than one might think. For chickens you would want something with a spacing of no more than ½” and at least 19 ga dia wire. Options are hot dip galvanized hardware cloth ½ x ½ x 19 ga or for an even stronger option GAW (galvanized after welding) ½ x ½ x 16 ga.
Why Choose Chicken Wire?
- Soft, malleable and easily manipulated or formed
- The pre-galvanized material comes in 2’, 4’ and 6’ wide rolls
- The black PVC comes in 4’ and 6’ wide rolls
- Cost-effective versus welded wire mesh
- The stainless steel material comes in 4’ wide rolls
