Comparing Twill And Plain Weave Steel Mesh

September 07, 2022

Steel mesh or steel wire mesh is an integral part of many industries including construction, agriculture, and the aerospace sector. It is formed by weaving two steel wires together to form a grid-like pattern. This type of wire mesh can be woven in multiple ways, including a plain weave, a twill weave, the dutch weave, or a combination of the three. The differences between the first two will be examined below.

Difference between plain and twill weave.

Plain Weave:
In a plain weave, the warp wire, which spans the length of the mesh, passes above and below a shute wire. Shute wire is the wire spanning the width of the mesh and vice versa. Furthermore, the diameter of the wires used in warp and shute wires is the same. This creates a standard, grid-like pattern.

Twill Weave:
In a twill weave, instead of passing over and under one wire, the warp wire runs above and below two shute wires. Similarly, a shute wire passes over and under two warp wires. Not only does this create a stronger bond, but it also offers the following benefits:

  • Wires with larger diameters can be used as deformation is minimal during weaving.
  • Twill woven wires offer greater density than plain woven wires, offering more strength.
  • Due to the complex grid pattern, it acts as a more optimal filter compared to its plain counterpart.
  • It is also more tensile than plain weave wires.

Due to these significant benefits, twill weave steel mesh can be utilized as a filter or a sieve. They can also be used in multiple ways in mining, glass, petroleum, textile, and other metallurgical disciplines. It can even be used for aesthetic purposes as decorative screens, which will be explored in future blogs.
