Comparing Two Varieties Of Stainless Steel Wire Mesh

November 22, 2023
Steel Mesh Manufacturing In Toronto

Wire mesh, made by interlocking metal wires in a grid-like pattern, is available in different types of metals, alloys, patterns and mesh sizes. Among them, the steel mesh, especially stainless steel wire mesh is popular in both architectural and industrial applications. However, even stainless steel mesh can be further sub-classified on the basis of grade. In this blog, two such grades and their applications are explored.

What Are Two Types Of Stainless Steel?

There are predominantly two grades of stainless steel, 304 and 316.

304 Grade Stainless Steel

This grade of stainless steel has around 18 percent chromium and 10 percent nickel. Hence, it is also known as 18/10 stainless steel. This type of steel mesh is excellent for food-grade applications, such as flour sifting, milling, feed sifting, water filtration and more.

316 Grade Stainless Steel

The constituents of 316 stainless steel mesh vary only a little when compared to 304 stainless steel. It comprises 16 percent chromium, 10 percent nickel, and 2 percent molybdenum. The addition of molybdenum significantly increases the quality of 316-grade stainless steel wire mesh as it makes it more corrosion resistant, although there is no noticeable change physically. Hence, this grade of steel mesh is better suited for outdoor applications and is highly durable even in marine environments. Consequently, the cost is higher than 304-grade stainless steel.

In conclusion, for those seeking quality steel mesh for food procession, the former is ideal, and for applications where corrosion resistance takes center stage, the latter is preferred.
