Country Spotlight: The Musee d’Orsay and its Wire Sculptures

The Musée d’Orsay sits on the bank of the Seine River in Paris, France. It is arguably one of the most important museums in the world, boasting an impressive selection of artwork from the period 1848-1914.

The museum’s beginnings date back to 1900 as a former railway station. It welcomes more than two million visitors a year, and this summer, one of our staff who visited found several stunning examples of mild steel wire, most notably this wire sculpture. Located in the Café Campana, its eclectic orange represents an impressionist theme while also embracing the values of modern décor.

Café Campana is designed by two famous Brazilian designers who sought to pay tribute to artists such as Emile Gallé. The café is named after them, the Campana brothers, and is designed to create a dream-like aquatic environment.

The mild steel wire is placed in various places in the dining area, as backdrops against tables and chairs.

Ferrier is pleased to supply many local artists and designers with mild steel wire, perforated and expanded metals for their artwork. Artists such as Rudy Kehkla bring two dimensional ideas and illustrations to life with wire. Kehkla’s wire sculpture creations include animals, famous figures and abstract mobiles. Using our stainless steel wire and weavemesh he created a piece called The Tennis Player, which you can view here.

In addition to the mild steel wire Kehkla uses, he also uses materials such as stained glass, copper, bronze and cobbles of granites. As a University of Toronto BASc graduate, his understanding of anatomy and physiology guide his intricate creations. He has over 20 years of experience successfully showing and selling his work around the world.
