Fabrication Spotlight Series: Spiral Perforated Cylinders
Our work in metal fabrication dates back to 1912, when we focused primarily on wire. More than a century later, Ferrier Wire now offers a variety of fabrication services that include working with sheet metal, perforated metal, wire mesh and expanded metal. We no longer fabricate wire display goods or wire products.
Our spiral perforated cylinders are made from 316 grade stainless steel, used as back up tubes for industrial filtration applications and for creative lighting applications. The perforated tube portion of the cylinder is made by a perforated tube mill in the U.S. in 10’ lengths, with the rest of the manufacturing completed in house. Here is a quick summary of our process:
1.After we receive the perforated tube, we cut them down to size and TIG weld on a variety of ends (solid as per diagram of different lengths). We can close the ends with stainless steel, perforated metal, or leave them as is. For more information on the TIG welding process, click here.
2.The cylinders go through a vigorous grinding process to erase evidence of the weld.
3.Our slotted perforated cylinders are made from plain mild steel material. These are fabricated by shearing flat sheets to size, rolling the material to the required diameter and then TIG welding the seam. Depending on the request, we can also grind and clean the welds.
We offer our customers the option to have their cylinders powder coated, plated or left unfinished. The images below are of the cylinders with a light shade powder coating. The metal will rust if left unfinished, which is often what a customer wants to achieve a more raw and industrial look. The stainless steel spiral perforated cylinders are normally paired with wire mesh overscreens for use in the food industry.
