Product Spotlight: Chicken Wire Mesh, Hexagonal (hex) and Poultry Netting

Ferrier Wire stocks an extensive range of chicken wire mesh, also commonly known as chicken wire, poultry netting and hexagonal (hex) wire netting.

Chicken wire is manufactured with machines that twist the wire together to create the hexagonal shape.

There are two main types of twist: straight twist and reverse twist. The straight twist generally has 3 twists and the reverse twist has seven. At regular intervals along the length of the roll are straight wires running across the width of the material as reinforcement.  Ferrier Wire stocks three types of chicken wire: galvanized, stainless steel and PVC coated.

The galvanized hex netting can either be woven from a galvanized wire or hot dip galvanized after weaving.  Ferrier Wire stocks the following galvanized items:

Galvanized 1” hex x 22 ga

Reverse twist, woven from galvanized wire

4’ x 150’ rolls

6’ x 150’ rolls

The 1” chicken wire mesh is commonly used for cages and animal control.  It is also suited for use in the arts and crafts, often as a substrate for sculpture.

Common applications for the ½” chicken wire mesh are cages, animal control (see images below of enclosure built to keep squirrels out of a vegetable garden) and arts and crafts.

The 20 ga mesh is thicker than the other galvanized items for use where something a little stronger is required.

In addition to the common galvanize chicken wire mesh, Ferrier Wire stocks the following specialty hex netting:

The stainless steel is primarily used to hold up insulation in highly corrosive environments such as in smoke stacks and in refractory applications.

This very durable product is most often used as a fencing product.
