Product Spotlight: The Benefits of a Galvanized Steel Mesh

August 01, 2018

Galvanized metal is a versatile and industrial material that sees common use in a great many different industries, for good reason. Our galvanized steel mesh products are commonly used in the agricultural and construction industries; the purpose of this post is to discuss why.

“Galvanized steel” refers to a steel object that has been prepared with a zinc coating to increase its resilience against rust. Typically, a steel fence can be an effective physical barrier, with the unfortunate drawback of being highly susceptible to outdoor elements. Coating the steel with zinc oxide enhances its protection from the environment, allowing it to withstand the elements with enhanced effectiveness. Because many of our products are deployed in outdoor environments, where rain, fog, and other environmental factors can cause corrosive or moisture-based damage to the structure, the use of galvanized steel mesh can be an effective means of preventing long-term damages that can cause unexpected failure down the road.

Beneath the zinc, the steel still retains much of the strength, durability, and reliability that so many associate with it.

Another important advantage of galvanized steel stems from the galvanization process itself. To create galvanized steel, the mesh is dipped into a source of molten zinc, which is bonded permanently to the surface of the metal after it’s cooled. As a result, inspecting your mesh is a very simple process: a simple visual inspection will allow you to detect most possible flaws in the structure. In addition, their strong resistance to the elements means that general maintenance is not a significant concern for these structures – at most, you may need to clean an outdoor mesh or fence once per year, with alkaline water.

There are many reasons to work with a galvanized steel mesh, and many uses for this material, available from Ferrier Wire.

In the images below, it's possible to see the difference galvanization can make for fencing; in the left-most image, the zinc coating is not protecting the welds, exposing them to rust, while in the central and right-most image, the welds are fully galvanized and protected from damages due to rusting.

Feel free to contact us any time to learn more about its uses, and how they can benefit your own project.
