Specification Sheet Spotlight: The Creative Process
Specification sheets (also known as spec sheets) are important documents that summarize the characteristics of a product. They serve as key points of reference in many industries. For example, they detail the functioning and operation of machinery or the breakdown of chemical components in a formula.
At Ferrier, we have taken the time to create accurate spec sheets that detail the unique characteristics of each woven wire mesh pattern. We understand how critical this information is for you as a designer, business owner, artist or architect. It is our hope that with these spec sheets you are able to determine which pattern best serves your application.
This complex process involves outsourcing work to other firms in order to produce drawings that are as accurate as possible. We did not use a mill template; all work was done from scratch. Here is a glimpse into the work behind the scenes.
First, we needed precise measurements taken of each pattern. We did our research before we took the materials to a facility where a machine called an optical comparator gave us precise measurements. This machine projects a part of the material onto a screen and measures its exact dimensions against prescribed limits. Read more about the comparator here.
Once we had the measurements, we worked with a drafting company to produce CAD drawings for our woven wire mesh and other wire patterns.
The drawings you see on the spec sheet take an isometric view with a 3D representation of the crimps in both directions. There are two different crimps: an A and B section.
We have recently completed a set of spec sheets for a few of our perforated patterns, which you can view below:
- .020" Round Hole x 0.44" Straight Pattern
- 0.45" Round Hole x .066" Straight Pattern
- 1/8" Round Hole x 3/16" Staggered Centres
- 3/8" Round Hole x 1/2" Staggered Centres

Stay tuned for the release of additional spec sheets! In the meantime, view our full woven wire mesh and wire product selection here.
